About the event
Topics that will be covered in the field day include information on maple syrup production, and information on nontimber forest products including mushrooms and ginseng.
In the past, Indiana was one of the top producers of maple syrup in the country. Many farms used to produce it to supplement their income in the winters. With the clearing of forest in the state, production has declined. Purdue Extension is working to increasing the production and consumption of Indiana maple syrup. Four Flags Farm is operated by Armonda and Ben Riggs, and they produce maple syrup in addition to mushrooms and vegetables. Maple syrup production is compatible with other nontimber forest products like mushrooms and ginseng. Lenny Farlee, Purdue Extension Forester, will discuss other possibilities for products from forests besides maple syrup.
